- Types of Insulated Storefront Glass The definition of an IGU is that it contains at least two or three pieces of glass with something in between. However, you can build on this by incorporating different glass types and coatings. Discover some of the basic types of IGUs.
- Dual-Pane Glass Dual-pane glass is the very definition of an IGU. This glass type consists of two panes of glass with a small gap between them. Desiccant is often incorporated in the frame to prevent moisture buildup between the panes. The actual glass types for the panes can vary, but tempered glass is a common choice.
- Gas-Filled Glass Gas-filled glass is similar to dual-pane glass. You get two or three panes and a space between them. However, inert gas fills the gaps between the panes. The most commonly used gas is argon, which acts as an extra insulator.
- Glazed, Coated, and Tinted Glass Some IGUs are not only made with different glass materials, but also have a glaze, coat, or tint. Low-E insulated glass, for example, has a very thin coat that reduces the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that enters the room. This coat is beneficial if you have items prone to fade, like artwork and fabrics.
